At Pressific, we host our websites on cloud web servers that are powered by renewable energy sources, making them carbon neutral. This means that the servers’ carbon emissions are offset by the use of clean energy, resulting in a minimal carbon footprint and a positive impact on the environment.
All Pressific websites are hosted on the Google Cloud Platform. We do this by using Google Compute Engine (GCE) which has been carbon neutral since 2007.
Google Compute Engine is an Infrastructure as a Service offering that allows clients to run workloads on Google’s physical hardware. The Google Cloud Platform runs on 100% renewable energy.
For most of our websites, we use Content Delivery Networks (CDN). We have been using Cloudflare for this from the beginning. Read about what Cloudflare is doing with regards to energy consumption.
Let's focus on clean air and clean water rather than argue about the causes of climate change
While there may be differing opinions on the cause of climate change, at Tech Generation (which operates Pressific), we prefer to concentrate on the simpler and obvious benefits of using sustainable energy.
Our focus is on clean air, clean water, and other environmental benefits that result from using renewable energy sources.
Using sustainable energy sources such as wind, solar, hydropower, and geothermal, can provide several benefits:
1. Energy independence and security
Energy independence refers to the state where a country is not dependent on other countries for its energy needs. This is important for a number of reasons, including reducing the risk of supply disruptions, increasing economic stability and reducing the impact of energy price fluctuations. Renewable energy sources play a key role in achieving energy independence as they can be generated domestically, reducing the need for imports.
2. Economic benefits
The use of sustainable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydropower can provide significant economic benefits to both individuals and society as a whole. Firstly, it reduces dependence on non-renewable energy sources such as oil and coal, which are finite and subject to price volatility. This can lead to increased energy security and stability in energy prices. Additionally, investing in sustainable energy can create new job opportunities in the development, construction, and maintenance of renewable energy facilities. 3. Improved public health benefits
Burning fossil fuels releases harmful pollutants into the air, including particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide. These pollutants can lead to respiratory and cardiovascular problems, as well as other serious health issues.
4. Reduced water usage
Sustainable energy sources, such as wind, solar, and geothermal, typically use much less water compared to traditional energy sources like coal, natural gas, and nuclear. This is because the latter requires large amounts of water for cooling purposes, which can lead to thermal pollution and strain on local water resources.
5. Improved energy access
Sustainable energy has greatly improved energy access in many parts of the world. Access to energy is a critical aspect of economic and social development, as it enables communities to light homes, power businesses, and support other essential services. In the past, access to energy has been limited by the reliance on traditional fossil fuels which are finite, non-renewable, and associated with significant environmental problems.
Tech Generation plants trees to offset any remaining carbon use
When we started our company, Tech Generation, which owns Pressific, our only choice was to offset the carbon footprint. Carbon offsetting is good but not as good as using renewable non-carbon energy sources.
We’ve now found top-level server and network infrastructure suppliers who are using renewable energy. All Pressific client websites use renewable energy. Tech Generation’s affordable DIY hosting brand, Fusion Bear also runs on 100% renewable energy but with a different infrastructure partner.
We overestimate and offset the carbon cost of our staff for business and personal energy consumption and leisure travel. We plant trees via Ecologi.
Committed to being Earth-friendly
What's next?
We are looking to persuade our software suppliers, payment gateways, and banks to switch to renewable energy too. No matter what we do, there is more that can and should be done.
We are happy with what we’ve managed so far. But we will be doing more.
Although we are now happy to market our green hosting, the primary reason for being green is driven by the personal beliefs of the founders. As a privately held company, Tech Generation is not obligated to prioritise profits.
